In the early 1980s Scott Keenan, executive director of Grandma’s Marathon at the time, started and directed the Minnesota Mile in Duluth, Minnesota. At the time, it was the second mile road race to be hosted in the United States behind the Fifth Avenue Mile directed by legendary race director, Fred Lebow. After a seven year run, the Minnesota Mile was discontinued.
In the summer of 2006, Keenan approached the staff and board of directors of Grandma’s Marathon with the idea of reviving the Minnesota Mile. The idea was unanimously supported.
Our goal is to make the Minnesota Mile one of the premier mile road-races in the United States.
