The leaves are starting to change and the days are getting shorter and with that comes a whole new season of great competitions. Fall is a great time for competitions and something for everyone from Pumpkin Carving to Apple Bobbing and even Bavarian GoGo Dancing, but let’s start with the Ocean Beach Oktoberfest commencing at 4:20 PM on Friday, October 10th.
It goes without saying that the festival includes Stein Holding and Bratwurst Eating Competitions, but don’t toss your cookies after too much beer. Toss the sausage instead. Just toss a sausage into the tub to qualify for the main event worth $10,000 in cash – yep just for tossing a sausage. But the fun doesn’t stop there, don’t miss the Blondathon, Balloon Blow and Miss Oktoberfest contests.
But just what exactly is Oktoberfest? Oktoberfest is the world’s largest funfair held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It is a 16-day festival running from late September to the first weekend in October with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year. Locally, it is often simply called Wiesn, after the colloquial name of the fairgrounds (Theresienwiese) themselves. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since 1810. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the original Munich event so break out the lederhosen and drindls (the sexy Bavarian getup for ladies), get out there and have some fun, Bavarian style. Can’t find an event near you, why not host your own Oktoberfest?
