Worthing International Birdman 2014 – Summary
Wow !! What an amazing weekend at the 2014 Worthing International Birdman. Day 1 provided ideal flying conditions and after 31years of trying an aviator finally flew over 100m on the Jackpot line.
Tony Hughes flew 117.1m and this guaranteed one of the competitors would walk away with £10,000 !!
The jackpot prize is awarded to the longest flight during the competition over 100m but this flight has to be as the crow flies from the platform.
Just 10 minutes later Ron Freeman took to the skies and rose to the challenge set by Tony by achieving a massive 159.4m.
31 years and then 2 flights over 100m on one day!!
Day 2 the strong winds would prove a challenge for even the most experienced aviator and it became clear that a flight as the crow flies would be difficult. The competitors elected to fly even though rough seas could cause damage to their craft.
Tony took off and turned towards the beach travelling an amazing 205.5m the first ever flight in any direction over 200m.
Ron was unable to reach Tony’s distance and his flight of over 168m meant that the £1,000 for the longest flight over the weekend was secured by Tony.
The Condor class was tied by Tony and Ron as this works on a points system and both achieved 22 points ..
Time in the air is then considered but with only 0.2 seconds between the aviators the good old Birdman spirit came to the fore and these two amazing competitors agreed to share the trophy and prize.
The fun competitors took to the skies dressed as minions, ugly sisters, scooby doo, ghostbusters and other fantastic costumes earning thousands for charity. The beach was packed and one Worthing shop reported 20% increase in takings on Saturday and a massive 300% up on Sunday.
The dates for 2015 are 15th / 16th August and you never know what will happen at the Worthing International Birdman event.
