The marathon starts up at Hardware Ranch, which is located in Blacksmith Fork Canyon, part of the Wasatch Mountain Range. Located North of Salt Lake City about 80 miles and about 23 miles from Logan, Utah, home of Utah State University, Hardware Ranch WMA is managed for wildlife, wildlife habitat, and wildlife enthusiasts. During the winter we run a feeding and outreach program that helps to limit the migration of Rocky Mountain elk into Cache Valley, where they impact local farm and ranch hay crops. It also provides us a unique opportunity to interact with the public. Hardware Ranch WMA is open to all kinds of public access including; hiking, camping, hunting, and fishing. The main meadow complex where we conduct the winter program is the only area closed to the public. This area is used for hay production during the summer and designated as a game rest area throughout the year.
