The Great Ontario-Hopped Craft Brew Competition
You are invited to participate in the 2nd annual Great Ontario-Hopped Craft Beer Competition (GOHCBC) to be held in February, 2014 at the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Convention (OFVC) in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Last year we had 13 excellent entries and helped forge new relationships between Ontario’s hop growers and brewers as they showcased unique, locally grown hops and brews at Canada’s largest horticultural convention.
“The competition is open to commercial brewers, students in their graduating year of an accredited Ontario Brewmaster course and commercial hop producers in Ontario. Each entry is required to use only Ontario-grown hops. If you require contact information for an Ontario hop grower or brewer, please contact the event organisers. This year, the style will be the American Brown Ale. All official rules and regulations including eligibility, style guidelines and deadlines are available in the 2014 GOHCBC Competition Rules Booklet on the OMAF and MRA website or upon request from event organisers.”
The winning entry will receive the Bottomless Cup Trophy for one year and acknowledgment on the Hop Production Page on the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Ministry of Rural Affairs website, The Grower national newspaper and other industry publications. Plaques will also be awarded to second and third place. In addition, we are adding an Honourable Mention award to be awarded at the judge’s discretion.

About the Competition
After more than a century, hops are making a comeback in Ontario agriculture. In 2012, the Ontario Hop Grower’s Association was launched to serve as a non-profit association of 28 organic and conventional growers in Ontario. Their mandate includes acting as a central voice and advocacy group for the industry; promoting hop-growing fundamentals through education, research, promotion, and marketing; and setting up a database of relevant growing and management information specifically for Ontario. Microbreweries are interested in using local hops to create unique brews, such as harvest ales. In addition, Niagara College’s new Brewmaster course is supplying Ontario with a new generation of brewers who are discovering that Ontario hops are a viable option. Due to this increased interest, hop production in the province is expected to grow by 50% in 2012, increasing from eight hectares (20 acres) to 12 hectares (30 acres).
The Great Ontario-Hopped Craft Brew Competition (GOHCBC) was conceived to bring together Ontario hop producers and the most significant end-user of the crop, the brewing industry.
